Wellington Water Resilience System Explainer.

Wellington Water infrastructure resilience project. Completed as part of a wider education campaign on what to do if there is ever an earthquake in the Wellington region and how Wellington Water is preparing for when one occurs.

I had lots of fun animating on this project as there was allot of character animation to do, something which doesn't happen everyday in my current line of work.

Animation and Post completed my myself, Pre production completed by PORT Group Ltd.

NZTA Explainer.

Allot of the work I have been doing lately is for the NZTA (New Zealand Transport Authority). Animation and Post-production by myself, Pre-production and design completed by PORT Group Ltd.

Wow, where did 4 years go?

Wow, where did those 4 years go?

Turns out starting a family really does mean you have almost no time for extra stuff. So what have I been up to? Well allot actually, I have been continuing to get freelance work and have completed several projects that I want to share as I find that they have been released to the general Joe public.

Here is a project from last year for the Department of Conservation. All of the design and  pre-production work was done by the amazing people at Port Group.

Take Care

Bonnie Animation Test

Wow, its been a while since O posted anything. Oops sorry!

The last few days I have been kept busy working on an animation test for a new zealand animation studio. Fingers crossed I can pick up more work if all goes well.

The animation rig I used for the test is called "Bonnie" by Josh Sobel. She is quite nice to work with and is nicely designed. If you want to download her you can find her at the following address

http://www.joshsobelrigs.com/bonnie

The audio was supplied by the animation studio and the only direction I was given is that she should be animated in a mid shot.

Anyway this is what I came up with.

The animation took me about 30 hours of work.

Goose and Gander Animation loops.

I have been busy this weekend working in Flash, making a couple of new animation loops based on our flock of Geese. The goal of this exercise was to create some new animation using Flash in a more realistic style with texture and colours being as close to the real geese as I could.

I started off by taking a few photographs of our geese. I used these images as reference when sketching the geese, mainly focusing on the posing and proportions of the birds.

When I had a sketch I was happy with, I saved and imported it into Flash and used it as a template to build my characters. Again I used the photographs as reference for painting the textures and colour of the feathers for both male and female geese.

Sketch of a Goose made using photographs as reference. Colour swatches to the left of the sketch where taken from the photographs using the eyedropper tool for ease of colour picking and painting in Flash.
The most time consuming part of the process was building the character to start with and getting the colours and texture looking right, after which the animation was reasonably quick to complete.

It has been a fun little project and I'll be having another go with some more animation soon, refining the process further and making more good looking animation!

Some more progress..

Making some more progress on my current scene.

As you can see I am starting to think about animation while designing the character and have been sketching out some basic movement poses. These will help out when it comes time to animate this character.

More progress today...

Been working on some Flash animation today.

This is going to be part of a much larger scene with more characters which I have yet to design and animate. I Couldn't resist getting some animation happening though so will tackle more of the scene in the coming days and weeks.

Getting used to blender.

Wow its been a while since my last post! As always the reason is the same, been crazy busy!

Lately been looking at using blender more and more instead of Maya. I had a friend ask if I could animate using blender for a possible work opportunity last week so I had a bit of a play on Saturday doing some basic animation to get used to the animation tools and editors inside blender.

After getting over the initial frustration of not being able to find things and getting used to the blender hot keys I must say that animation using blender is not that different from Maya. You have all of the same editors to adjust your animation frames and curves etc. Once you get over the initial hurdle of the fact that the axies in blender are not the same as the ones in Maya which threw me a bit to start with! I can definitely see myself learning more blender in the future and possibly trying to migrate all of my current skills and workflow over.

Fun Flash Animations

Been looking through some of my old flash work and found these fun little animations which I made a while ago, they are not really long enough to have a home or use anywhere so I thought id put them on my Vimeo page.

I would have made each of them in no more than a few hours some even quicker than that. They were done just for fun.

Anyway here they are for your viewing pleasure!

A new Demo Reel to start 2014

Once again it has been a while since I have posted anything on my blog.

Things have been really busy of late, but I have managed to sit down and update my showreel. I have included some of my newest work and also tried to show some of the process and elements that go into the finished product.

I am really pleased with how it has turned out and am really looking forward to adding more of the same quality work to it next year!

Enjoy the reel, and I would like to wish all of you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Kiwicarpool Stage 2 Animation

I have been super busy of late working on a vast range of different projects some of them animated, some illustrative and allot not related to animation at all. I hope to find more time to devote to animation soon once all of my non animated projects have been completed.

In the mean time here is another Kiwi carpool infomercial that I had the fortune of working on a few weeks ago.

This job came through rather urgently one afternoon with the client wanting the completed clip back within a few days. In the end I managed to turn this clip around in less than 24 hours.

Most of the animation is the same as in the last clip. The running time and most of the facts that the client wanted to hi-light have changed from the stage one animation and had to be re-timed and animated. The result I think is a much punchier and easier to assimilate informational video.

Enjoy!

Kiwi Carpool Infomercial

Hello Everyone!

Over the last few weeks I have been really busy with a few freelance projects and and a never ending list of domestic duties.

The latest project I was involved in has just been posted on Youtube, it was an infomercial style animation that aims to inform New Zealand drivers about the benefits of carpooling.

I was involved with the animation side of the project working with one other animator. I was asked to create several animated elements that move within the design provided by the client. Then to assemble all of the different parts and export for the web.

All of the animation was completed using a combination of Flash and After Effects.

Here is the completed video.

I enjoyed working on this project and learned allot about working on a project that had a really tight brief and a quick turnaround time.

As always I am looking for more animated or still freelance projects so please get in touch!

Spaceman Pose and lighting Test

Hey everyone,

Sorry its been a while since my last post, I have been super busy making preparations to move from Auckland down to Waihola and have not had too much time to put towards my own projects. I will be moving on the 21st so will more than likely be offline for a week or so until we can get everything straightened out again in the South Island.

In the mean time I have been busy recording my brain waves onto the school hard drives so that a small part of me can live on and manipulate the minds of future generations of south seas animation students!

On my own front I have been testing the spaceman rig and ironing out any bumps, kinks, and bruises in the rig so that he is ready for the school project which starts production on the 8th of July. Our second year students are busy working on pre-production design work for the world, props and vehicles as we speak.

All I can say is that the project is looking like its going to be a doozy this year, and I will be looking forward to seeing the completed product.

I am starting to get the hang of this blogging lark!

This is my latest Demo reel which shows examples of some of my more recent work, including Character Animation, Lighting, Rendering and Composite. It also has some of my hand drawn animation and digital 2D animation and painting.

UPDATE: I now have a new Demo reel which you can view here.
